The primary venue for my chair making courses is Spinney Hollow woodland near Fair Oak Hampshire. This beautiful woodland belongs to Geoff Brown and Kate Hadley who manage the woodland and host a variety of interesting courses. (visit

6 day Chair making course.
The first day of this course starts at 2pm. There is a brief induction and an opportunity to meet fellow participants. After pitching your tent or settling into your accomodation we head to the workshop and start using the tools.
The afternoon is spent practicing the basic techniques and deciding what style of chair you would like to make. There are plenty of books and some examples of chairs to inspire you.
You will be guided through the process of making a chair from a freshly cut Ash log, learning a variety of skills;
Cleaving the round wood with a Froe,

Shaving the chair parts with a draw-knife,
Turning on the pole-lathe,
Steam bending of various chair parts,
Assembling the chair,
Seating the chair.
There is a camping area where you can pitch your own tent for free or you can stay in a bell tent for £20. the camping area is adjacent to the kitchen and dining area.

The kitchen area has everything you need to cook your meals.
Typically, course participants arrange a food kitty and the preparation of evening meals is shared.
There are local pubs and restaurants within a few miles should you wish to eat out!
